The robotics laboratory has switched on a private 5G testbed that lets autonomous ground vehicles offload their perception workload to an edge server instead of carrying it on board.

The robotics laboratory has switched on a private 5G testbed that lets autonomous ground vehicles offload their perception workload to an edge server instead of carrying it on board.

A network students are allowed to break

The arrangement is a joint build with a telecommunications partner, and it gives students a network they are allowed to saturate, break and reconfigure — something no production network would tolerate.

Three research groups have already booked time on the testbed for the coming semester.
